Smart Source, January 31 (The Seattle Times)

The Seattle Times is the only West Side newspaper that we can get in the Tri-Cities (least as far as my gas station carries). I know that the newspaper cluster @ the Pasco Post Office carries other newspapers (years ago they use to carry the Moses Lake Columbia Basin Herald) but I don't know what newspapers they now carry other than the TCH.

At any rate, this is the cover of the Smart Source insert found in today's The Seattle Times. The following are what coupons that can be found in the TST that are not found in the TCH. Over all what we received in the TCH is exactly what can be found in TST. The only coupons not in TST are the K-Y, General Mills cereal, Chinet Comfort Cup & Sarna Original or Sarna Sensitive Anti-Itch Lotion.

Is your internet printable coupon a legitimate coupon?

If your printing your coupons from any place other than an official site (see this post about sites to print coupons from) then there is the chance that the coupon you have is a fake.
I've mentioned it before but I'll go over it again. Each coupon is embedded with a watermark and has a unique number attached to it. That number can be found under the top right bar code (typically under the expiration date) and can be verified at

If the coupon is valid you will see something similar to this (note: I blocked out the number off my coupon, when you use Veri-Fi you'll see your coupon number):
Hope this helps you from being the victim of a fake coupon.

Goodies in the mail! Betty Crocker calendar

My Betty Crocker 2010 calendar came in the mail today along with my coupon for a free pint of International Delight coffee creamer! Woohoo! I love goodies in the mail!

How to cheat the coupon system?

In a word... you don't. Each and every internet printable coupon you get has a unique number embedded as well as watermarks. Attempting to photocopy the coupon will result in the watermark showing up. Attempting to pass off multiple printables, all with the same number, will result in the cash register to beep and if by chance it does go through well that store, once they realize they've been scammed, will stop taking internet printables so the next time you try not only will you be out of luck but so will other couponers. In other words, don't try to cheat the coupon system.

I will state one thing. You can LEGITIMATELY get internet printable coupons off of multiple websites. I have at least six Yoplait Yogurt Smoothie $1/1 coupons that I obtained from three different sites. Here are some sites to bookmark so that when coupons reset you have a chance to print up two copies of what coupon you want to use.
Also check those e-mails because many companies embed a link to a coupon for their products. I get e-mails from Martha Stewart, Food Network and tons and tons of recipe companies. Typically every e-mail I get from a company will have some sort of coupon or coupon code attached. In fact, I have a few from Barnes & Nobel that came this morning and last night (I have a membership card so I get one a day before non-members get one).

To me, saving money is a game but I'm not willing to cheat the store because no one wins. When the stores lose money it becomes a lose-lose situation for everyone because the store will raise prices to recoup the lose and/or they'll stop taking internet printables. So play fair and print only TWO coupons per site you visit. Don't make photocopies and don't try to scam a store!

Recipe: tzatziki

I'm obsessed with tzatziki. I just love it but the stuff you can get at Yoke's and Fred Meyer is WAY over priced (between $3 & $5) and not yummy at all. Here's my recipe and this is typically the way *I* make it so I don't bother to drain it because within a day or so it will become more thick.

2 cups of Greek PLAIN yogurt WITH NO FLAVORINGS (about $2.50 to $3.50 depending on where you buy it and if you have a coupon)
10 to 20 cloves of garlic
2 to 3 cucumbers, peeled
1 package of baby dill
1 tbsp lemon juice
pinch of salt, to taste

In a food processor I combine garlic, lemon juice and dill until blended. I change the blade to the cheese blade and add the cucumber. In a large bowl mix yogurt and cucumber mixture with salt. From here you can drain it using a sieve and cheese cloth or leave as is and let to naturally thicken up overnight.

Now you have about three to four cups of dip to use on everything from salads to sandwiches to even eating it with potato chips (my weakness). Enjoy!

Tzatziki is VERY easy to customize. Don't like that much garlic? Use less. Like it more sour? Add more lemon juice. Like more of a cucumber taste? Use more cucumber. You can make it chunky buy adding chopped cucumber or more creamy by blending the dip more. It really is up to you.

Personally, I make it in HUGE batches. I buy plain yogurt @ Costco and it's HUGE. I use four or five cucumber, probably a cup of garlic and one to two packages of baby dill plus lemon and salt. My husband calls it my garlic-cucumber tzatziki. My kids gobble it up when I make it so it typically lasts in my house maybe three days.

One of my favorite meals is grilled chicken salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, cucumbers) in a pita with tzatziki. It's also one of my kids favorites and it's pretty healthy if you don't use the cheese. ;)

KNDU's Coupon Bug

It's 6:15 PM here and I'm watching KNDU and they're about to have a segment on Coupon Bug!

Newspapers & coupons

I was reading at A Thrifty Mom that some people are complaining to her about not getting the coupons she lists. It's not nice that people want to complain about things beyond her control.

In regards to my site.... As I've stated on my own site, the coupons I personally list on this site are found in the Tri-City Herald and will vary from other locations. Not all newspaper will carry Red Plum and I will once again list the area newspaper that carry Smart Source or Red Plum as I see listed on the coupon inserts itself.

SMART SOURCE that we get in the Kennewick, Richland, Pasco Tri-City Herald can also be found in these newspapers:
  • Spokane Spokemans-Review
  • Coeur 'Alene Press
  • Kellogg-Shoshone News-Press
  • La Grande Observer
  • Moses Lake Columbia Basin Herald
  • Walla Walla Union-Bulletin
  • Sandpoint Bonner County Daily Bee
  • Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Colville Statesman Examiner
  • Hermiston Herald
  • Moscow-Pullman Daily News
SMART SOURCE that can be found in The Seattle Times can also be found in these newspapers:
  • The Seattle Times
  • Tacoma News Tribune
  • Whidbey Whidbey News-Times
  • Wenatchee World
  • Aberdeen Daily World
  • Everett Herald
  • Mount Vernon Skagit Valley Herald
  • Port Angeles Peninsula Daily News
  • Bellevue Reporter
RED PLUM that we get in the Kennewick, Richland, Pasco Tri-City Herald can also be found in these newspapers:
  • Couer D'Alene Press
  • La Grande Observer
  • Moses Lake Columbia Basin Herald
  • Spokane Spokesman Review
  • Yakima Herald Republic
The Seattle Times does NOT get the Red Plum. I do know that the Tacoma Tribune and the Olympia Olympian do get the Red Plum inserts but I don't know what other papers in WA state get Red Plum. The Red Plum site DOES have a look up to see if your Red Plum inserts can be found in the mail or in a paper.

Internet printable: Contadina products

Fiesta Food's grocery deals for January 27 to February 2

I normally do not shop at Fiesta Foods simply because it's almost nine miles away and in my SUV it's typically not worth it unless I'm running errands in Pasco. However, those of you with small cars or who live closer to Fiesta Foods here are some really good deals to pick up.
  • Chicken of the Sea, in water 5 oz - limit 1 only 1 penny!

Yoke's grocery deals for January 27 to February 2

Sorry for the late posting. I took my fliers with me to the doctor's office yesterday and then left them in the back of the car. I only found them this morning when I went out there to find my son's backpack.

On to the deals and steals...

Deals & Steals
  • Roma tomatoes - 68¢ lb (it's a steal at Fiesta though at 49¢ lb)
  • Idahoan instant mashed potatoes, 4 to 4.1 oz - $1 each (10 for $10)
  • Nabisco Cheese Nips or Snak Saks, 8 to 15.5 oz - $1.50 each
  • Large, fancy navel oranges - 38¢ lb (now that's practically a steal)
  • Draper Valley, thrifty pack cut up fryers - 89¢ lb (Albertsons are also having a chicken deal this week)
  • WA grown apples (Braeburn, Jonagold, Pacific Rose or Grannysmith) - 58¢ lb
  • Nestles Candy bars - 29¢ each (1st 12) (now that's a steal as well)
Nothing I spot can be paired with a coupon for a free item unless I'm missing something. My coupon books are still in the garage from my last shopping trip so I need to bring those back inside to confirm some coupon prices.

More info on the Albertsons/Quaker coupon fraud alert

Karrie at Fistful of Coupons is reporting that someone had commented to her that someone went into the Albertsons store on Lee yesterday morning with lots of copies of Quaker internet printables ($1/1) and as a result walked out of the store with a cart load of free Quaker products.

I received another e-mail from the Gage store manager, who is also the Leslie store manager, and here's his reply on the matter.
We were told yesterday by our office not to accept these $1.00 off coupons from the internet. The Quaker rep said that they were not valid. We did see a couple different expiration dates and were told that some were able to print multiple times while others limit the customer to two ( which seems to be the valid type). We asked our company to partner with Quaker to figure this out which ones, if any, we can accept. We would like to accept all these coupons because it is only helps our sales but not if they are not valid and the amount will be charged back to our store.

I called Clearwater and told them of the notification and asked them to post notes explaining the issue so the customers wouldn't get blind sided at the check stand. I can't speak for the other stores, but that is what we did after being directed not to take these coupons.

And in regards to other internet printables:
... we do take internet printable coupons for the most part. We are told not to take the "free" coupons that are out there because they are most likely not valid. These would be "free carton of cigarettes", " free formula", etc. However, if the customer has to purchase something else and gets another item free, it is usually fine to take. Obviously, with the expansion of the internet in this arena it will only increase the amount of fraudulent items out there that we (retail stores and customers) wouldn't even know were fraudulent until we are told by the manufacturer.

My advice to anyone wanting to scam a store... You'll eventually get caught so DON'T DO IT! Yes, it's great to score a FREE item but only if you do it legitimately. It's not fair to the store or to the rest of us shoppers who are looking for a good deal! Worse yet is that the store(s) will discontinue taking ANY internet printables (WinCo stopped for a very long time) if fraudulent couponers keep coming in.

Oh, and one last thing that just popped into my head... it wouldn't be too hard for the manager at Albertsons to find out who did it and contact them since you also have to present your Albertsons preferred card which contains a person's name and phone number. Remember, they DO video tape so using the video tape, plus person's preferred card it wouldn't be hard for them to track down someone who knowing defrauded the store out of merchandise. (I watch WAY too much CSI!)

Sweet Yoplait Frozen Smoothie high val coupon!

$1.25 off ONE Yoplait Frozen Smoothie! Print your two FAST because these are probably going to go like hot cakes! I believe those are selling at WinCo (Richland) for $1.99 because I bought one a few weeks back using my $1/1 coupon and the final price was around 99 cents. With this coupon it makes the final price only 74 cents! I haven't been able to find this product at either the Gage or Edison Albertsons though. My kids LOVE the frozen yogurt for smoothies so with all of my $1/1 and $1.25/1 plus the ones from the 1/03/10 GM insert... I plan on stocking up.

FREE Tote @ Fred Meyer

(While supplies last. Limit 1 FREE. Offer good from Thursday, January 28 through Monday, February 15, 2010.)

Never go grocery shopping without your coupon book

I only planned on picking up a couple of chicken thigh packets from Albertsons because it's on sale for 88 cents a pound. Instead I did a wee bit of shopping and spent $40.16. Ok, sure I still saved $21.93 ($2.53 bonus buy savings, $10.85 preferred savings, $2.65 mfg coupons & $6 store coupons) but still I could have done much better. Basically it was factored out to about $2 an item (I bought 19 items). Ouch. Oh well, least I'm now up to 20 cents off a gallon for the month. I'll use that up later this month before the points expire.

Quaker internet printable fraud

I was at the Gage store again and notice tons of signs all over the breakfast aisle and the cash registers that specifically state that Albertsons has been informed of Quaker internet printable that are fraudulent and as such they are not accepting the printable coupons specifically for the Quaker sale. The url on the page came from their parent company so it's most likely a nationwide problem (not just at Albertsons but would most like affect their Save-A-Lot chain as well).

When I asked the girl at the customer service desk she said she had no idea if it was for all internet printables or just the Quaker ones. I really need to catch her name since this is the same girl that told me, back in December, that I had to buy a newspaper if I wanted a Sunday flier because Albertsons would no longer have them for customers.

I've e-mail Karrie from Fistful of Coupons and Lori at NW Coupon Mom as well as the Gage store manager. I'll have more information when I can get it.

Update @ 6:49 PM Pacific: I called the Leslie store to get more info while I'm waiting for a reply from the Gage manager. From what I was told the fraudulent coupon is for $1/1 any Quaker product. This in essence would make the product free. The word actually came down from their Quaker representative to SuperValu that the internet printables out for Quaker products are fraudulents hence ALL Albertsons stores will not be taking them.

It's a new grocery week!

It's a new grocery week and it looks like some of the stores are having some really great sales! Albertsons is having a $1 Quaker sale. I'm drooling over that! Safeway has a few really great deals and have some really great "steals" at their store this week. (Gatorade for 79 cents this weekend... and there's a coupon out there for a $1 off!) Yoke's has a really great deal on Roma tomatoes at 68 cents a pound but the great steal is at Fiesta where the Roma tomatoes are only 49 cents a pound! I have my ads and I'll be making my lists on each of the stores great savings so expect my weekly deals later today!

Albertsons on Gage, follow up

So I e-mailed Albertsons in regards to the coupon issue since it really annoyed me that the Gage store is the only Albertsons in the Tri-Cities that I'm hasseled about coupons. Here's my original e-mail to them, keep in mind they have a 2000 character limit:
I don't know why the Gage store has completely different rules regarding coupons & internet printable coupons. I went in last night and spent $124.82 and saved $148.34 using coupons, my preferred card & the bonus buy savings. I had an internet printable coupon from Great Gallon Give ( for a free half gallon of chocolate milk with the purchase of two one-gallon milks. I was told that Albertsons no longer takes printable for free items which I know is a lie because the Leslie store takes them and took a similar coupon this morning. This is not the first time I'm given a hassle about my coupons and it's becoming frustrating to shop at Albertsons on Gage yet the Edison and Leslie stores are further away from my home. Because of the hassles I spent almost $400 at WinCo instead of Albertsons. I only went back because of chicken deal this week. And I never heard back from the store manager from my last complaint about how I was treated over coupons.
Here is the 1st reply from Albertsons:
Thank you for contacting us regarding your dissatisfaction with an internet printable free product coupon not being accepted at your local Albertsons. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

Please review the following:

Internet Coupons Policy: Coupons printed from an internet website presented for redemption with a qualifying purchase.

Albertsons DOES NOT accept internet coupons containing the following conditions:

> Free product offers that do not require a purchase

Redemption value exceeding $5.00

Absence of UPC bar code

Photocopied internet coupons. Most internet sites will print a time and date stamp on the coupons, and limit each ISP address to two coupons total. If multiple coupon have the same time and date stamp this could be an indicator the coupon was photocopied, and will not be accepted. This is not a policy of the store but rather a means to prevent coupon fraud.

We strive for continued customer satisfaction and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that this may have caused you. Your comments have been sent to the Store Director, who will contact you within 24 business hours. For your records, your case number is 1-159325411.

If you have any further questions or concerns please contact our customer service center at 1-877-932-7948.

Well considering the coupon I had WAS a free item WITH the purchase of TWO items then the coupon should have been taken at the Gage store. This morning I checked my e-mail and here's the response from the store manager at Gage:
I'm sorry to hear about your experience at our store. We have been instructed not to take "FREE" coupons from the internet, but that should only apply to free items without having to purchase something in addition. The coupon you are describing seems like it should have been accepted. This really sounds like a training issue with our front end staff.

I will try to call you later to speak to you further. If you still have your receipt I can find out which associate is misunderstanding and correct that.
My phone number at the store is 627-4714 if I don't get in touch with you first.

Again, I apologize for the issue and thank you for letting us know.

So now I know, and everyone who reads my blog, that the Albertsons store policy on internet coupons on free items is that those are accepted so long as it's a "free with purchase" type and not just a "free".

Oh and I've replied back to the store manager via e-mail to let him know that the cashier from the other night wasn't rude in how she treated me but it was the policy she stated that I had a problem with.

Albertsons flier is now online

Not only have we been teased with the Quaker $1 sale but there are a few other great deals this coming week at Albertsons! Looks like we're getting at least eight coupons, I have no idea what since I haven't seen the new week's flier yet. Fistful of Coupons may have some more information on what the coupons may be of.

My shopping savings tonight @ Albertsons

Like I mentioned below, I went grocery shopping today (first time in two weeks) at the Gage Albertsons tonight. I was asked a couple of times, as I was shopping, if I was Karrie from Fistful of Coupons. Nope, I'm not her. I know her, I've attended her coupon class (which is a must if you're a couponer or new to couponing).

I bought 69 items and spent $124.82, saved $148.34. My savings included $40.70 in Bonus Buy Savings, $84.79 preferred savings, $19.45 in manufacturer and $3.40 in store coupons. I did buy 20 lbs of chicken breast at $1.88 lb. Chicken was among the few things we tend to specifically buy from Albertsons.

Gage Albertsons no longer taking printable coupons....

For FREE items. I was told this when I went to use my FREE half gallon milk with purchase of two gallon milks. I don't know about the other Albertsons but the Gage store will not take them. I was told if it was a printed one from an insert or magazine that's fine but not an internet printable. I'll have to call the other Albertsons in town and if I have to switch stores because of this I will.

The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook

The book I won on Erin's site arrived today! Woot! I've take a quick look at it and there are some really good recipes in there.

Is it worth the price? Well I got mine for FREE from Erin but at it's roughly $10 and I can honestly say that yes, it's worth the price. My only "complaint" is that she doesn't include a section discussing clearance prices and stacking a store coupon with a manufacturer coupon on top of the clearance. But she can always add that in a revision down the road. ;)

I can't wait to really sit down with it and go through it. It'll be nice to cut my budget in half even more.

Where to get coupons

BEST PLACE: The Sunday newspaper!

In stores:

Blinkies – Found on various store aisles these little machines spit out coupons as you pull them out. Most blinkies have little lights that blink hence the name.

Catalinas – Receipt-like coupons printed at the register. Not all stores have Catalinas (such as WinCo). These are typically NOT printed on the back of the register receipt.

Hang/Wine Tags – Found around the neck of a bottle with a little piece of string or rubber band.

Peelies – Coupons found on certain products that peel away from the product.

Tearpads – Coupons on a tear away pad. Typically found in a display and not directly on the product.

Other ways:

Home mailers - sign up for products online or even contact a company to either complain or complement their products. Click here for a blog with over 200 links to companies that will mail you coupons!

Internet coupons - There are many places online that you can print coupons from. See links below for printable online coupons.

Magazines – Pretty much all magazines will have coupons in it. Better Homes & Gardens, Sunset, Parenting, Working Mother are a few. The BEST magazine with coupons is All You magazine.
